Steve Reeves’ Low-Carb, Low-Cost Workout Drink

by Matt Marshall on June 29, 2009

Before Ronnie Coleman, before Aaaaarnold, there was Steve Reeves.
He wasn’t the biggest bodybuilder the block (6′1, 216 pounds) but most guys would much rather look like Reeves than today’s modern bodybuilders.

In today’s quick article, I’m going to show you what Steve Reeves drank during this workouts.

Recently, I wrote an article detailing the workout drink of Reg Park. But Reg Park’s workout drink was very much a high carbohydrate, high-calorie affair and it wouldn’t be right for anyone trying to lose fat.

Steve Reeves’ workout drink has fewer carbs and fewer calories but still provides some important ingredients.

See for yourself:

Steve Reeves’ Low-Carb, Low-Cost Workout Drink:

1/2 gallon of water.
1/2 cup of lemon juice.
3 tablespoons of honey.

Dirt simple. And dirt cheap. I’m sure one workout drink would cost you less than 10 cents if you broke it down by ingredient.

Compare that many of the pricey workout drinks sold at the local gym that can go for $8 or more.

Not only is the Steve Reeve’s drink cheaper, but it’s probably more effective than the pricey alternatives. The water keeps you hydrated (obviously…), the honey provides simple sugars for quick energy (but not so much that you kill your fat loss efforts) and the lemon juice replaces the minerals and electrolytes lost when you sweat.

Bring a jug of Steve Reeve’s dirt-cheap workout drink to your next training session. I think you’ll be pleased with the results.

I like grape juice mixed with low sodium soda water. It has the simple sugars and the soda water gives it a sparkle that I find refreshing during a workout.

is there any protein in this drink?

Matt Marshall July 1, 2009 at 9:33 am

@ Rick: Good work, keep it up.

@ Bob: I like grape juice too when trying to put on weight but when trying to reduce body fat I eliminate the grape juice because of all the fast-acting carbs.

@ Zac: No.

BTW, I used this workout drink this morning and set personal records across the board. Sure, it was most likely due to placebo effect but I’ll take any edge I can get.

hey Matt… just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate this website. i consider myself slightly more intelligent than you average person; but even i got sucked into all the stupid, expensive, and self-sabotaging bullshit that the fitness and supplement industries feed us. then i discovered your website. i haven’t wasted any money on supplements; and i haven’t injured myself in a year. and that’s saying a lot for someone like me. (my hobbies include cage-fighting and weight-lifting) btw, have you heard of the POSE method of running? it’s the ONLY way i run now; and my knees feel great! you should run an article on it

It is very tasty and I tried it yesterday. It does give an energy spike but what I am worried about is the quality of honey that we use. From what I know, the honey we buy at the supermarket is not the top notch stuff and if we use that, if we are trying to get very lean, it’s not going to be a good idea. What are your thoughts on that? Is it alright to use honey from the supermarket or does it have to be raw organic stuff?

Matt Marshall August 2, 2009 at 9:02 am

We’re talking about a small amount of honey, consumed only during a workout.

Raw organic honey may be better for you but it’s not going to make a difference when it comes to fat loss.

I’ve used this drink in the past. The main theory behind this drink is that if you manage your carbs and sugars throughout the day this drink will give your blood stream an insulin spike because its pretty much 100% sugar and vitamin C.

It works great when consumed prior to working out, other then that I recommend water and stay away from Caffeinated products prior to working out.

1/2 a gallon is about 2 litres. Are we to drink during, just before, or in between workouts? Do we drink it in one go, or throughout the day?
